Our Story

Welcome to your friendly neighborhood boulangerie!

The history of Le Fournil goes back multiple generations. Jean-Francois Hebert comes from a long line of boulangers (French bread bakers). In Normandy, where Jean-Francois was born and raised, his father was a baker, his grandfather was a baker and his great grandfather was a miller. In the shop at 115 2nd Ave, you can see framed flour bags from his grandfather’s shop in the 1940's, sent as aid by the US to the shores of Normandy during World War II.

Jean-Francois' love of baking began as a child when he worked in his family’s bakery in France, and after visiting New York City for the first time, it became his dream to bring an authentic, neighborhood boulangerie to New Yorkers. Along the way he met a very special New Yorker, his wife, Elizabeth, with whom he now owns and operates the bakeries.

While the bread is the star of the menu, Le Fournil also takes pride in offering sweet and savory pastries as well as nostalgic items that bring a bite of France to you.
